Reusing

I love to find new ways to use something. This weekend, we moved the girlie into a twin bed. The crib is shortly going to be used for a new resident so we figured it would be best to have her happily settled into a new bed so as to hopefully minimize any angst regarding said resident.

The mattress is an extra-long so I had to order a waterproof pad but didn't remember to order a bedskirt. So I tried my hand at remaking the crib skirt into a twin skirt. A little cutting and stitching later and there it is!

Matching little polka dots to the sheets as well.

Then I was looking at the little bit of fabric left over. (I didn't feel the need to go ALL the way around the bed, two sides seemed sufficient..) The easiest thing to do was sew a little ribbon along the top and make a twirly wrap-around skirt for the girlie. She seems to like it and hopefully it will fit easily for quite some time!

Here's the dilemma I am currently in. I want to make a headboard (something like this) for her bed as it feels as though it is missing something. Should I use the same fabric as her curtains or find something to go along with the polka dot theme? I already have more of the curtain fabric and it is a nice, heavy material, but I don't know if it would be too much of the same in the room. Opinions?

Use the curtain fabric! If you go with the polka dots I think it will be overwhelmingly "dotty'. Then again, is there more than one window in the room?

Two windows...

I vote curtain fabric...you can always recover the headboard if it feels too overwhelming. And it will be a huge chunk of fabric covering said headboard, so if it is too much just pull it off and save it for something else.

Genius on the 1/2 bedskirt by the way! She's super cute in her twirly skirt!

I vote for the curtain fabric as well! She will "grow" with that pattern and it will look fabulous as a padded headboard!

I vote for a solid color (something going along with your pink theme, but maybe more neutral?) headboard with something (her name or profile silhouette with some floral decoration?) printed or stamped on it (ala Lena Corwin: http://tinyurl.com/ybvy9n9 I have the book if you want to borrow it ;) ).

OK Abi, see, this is why I throw things out there. How about you come help me with your little artist brush and I'll teach you all my kitchen secrets? Deal?

Anne, where are the polka dot sheets from? We're reorganizing kids' rooms in the nearish future (all 4 are in 1 room right now) and I wanted to use polka dots just like those in the girls' room.

Also, are you familiar with fabric.com? They have a good clearance section (a few upholstery fabrics for $1.95/yard). If you end up wanting different material, that might be a good place to look.

I think I got the sheets from Bed Bath & Beyond...

And yes, I LOVE fabric.com. It's actually really quite dangerous for me to go on there. :)
