In Which I Eat Healthy And Freak Out

It's always a challenge to really eat well. More fresh food, fewer preservatives. Less sugar and more whole foods. I love a good fruit smoothie for breakfast so when I found a recipe that suggested adding kale or another green to the banana and strawberries, I thought I would give it a try. Kale has never been one of my favorites, but I keep finding more and more ways to sneak it into foods I cook since it's one of the best greens to eat.

In the smoothies it's fantastic. Why? Because I can't taste it. Likewise in spaghetti sauce or meatloaf. It's amazing all the good stuff you can sneak into food! I've heard about the Deceptively Delicious book and I really need to get one because I think it would be right up my alley. Good thing my birthday is coming up next week...

I also try to eat as many fresh fruits as possible. Grapes are always the easiest because I can snack on them while doing almost anything else. This morning I was happily washing a cluster when what pops onto my counter but a grody little spider! After I calm down, I grab a paper towel to squash him and then notice there was another dead one that fell out of the bunch! You'd better believe I washed those a little extra after that. I'm going to be jumpy for the rest of the day now...

I got one of those books as an early birthday gift...and I love it! I haven't actually tried the recipes yet, but they look so easy (after a little prep time) and I can't wait to try them! Fortunately Hannah is a great eater, but this will help me find new ways to add good stuff rather than just the same old. Besides, she can only eat so much anyway. I don't cook much anyway when Brandon's gone. Hard to cook for only one!
Yuck about the spider!

I never cook when it's just me either. Though what I do eat often ends up being healthier. Hmmm...

check it out at the library first to see if you'll like it. i also have a ton of pureed broccoli, yellow squash and sweet potato, so don't buy any when you want to try a recipe.

The one thing I notice about Kale, though is that it starts to stink a little after only a couple of days in the fridge.

We used to buy it for the tortoises, but it was smelly, so I stopped. Weeds are better for them anyway. So if you get Kale, use it up quick before it stinks.

I wonder if that has to do with where it gets harvested and when. Mine seems to last about a week without getting yucky at all. I have been sharing with my brother's turtles as well.

I remembered a good recipe for kale...my favorite soup is the Zupa Toscana (sp?) from Olive Garden...it uses several cups of kale.

That is one of my faves too!! I was actually just thinking about that one yesterday. Do you have the recipe?

yeah...I'll track it down tomorrow and email it to you! Gotta hit the sack for now...the little one always wakes up earlier than I'm ready to! :)

"Grody" is a word that has sadly not been used in common vernacular enough lately. I'm going to make a concerted effort to start using it more--how can a word that means "disgusting" be so much fun?

I have "The Sneaky Chef" - totally neat. Yes, I already did a bunch of that kind of thing too, but it takes it to a whole new level.

Becks, I'll be waiting anxiously. I was seriously just telling Jean I needed to find that recipe!

Talena, I love the word grody. Course, firefox doesn't think it's a word at all.

Thanks for another title, I'll have to check that one out too!

It is a good day for soup...I think I'll have some later! Right now (since it's 12:30) I need to get some breakfast...maybe another smoothie?
